Geography Bee winner
Eighth-grader Katelyn Henderson was the 2007 Olpe Junior High geography bee winner. To qualify for state, she must participate in a written test and receive a qualifying score. State will be held on March 30, 2007.
Lions Club receives grant
Joyce Wilson Olpe Lions Club president announced at the January meeting that the club has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Emil Babinger trust toward a new rest room project in the Olpe-Jones city park. Wilson and Jennifer Kimberline wrote the grant proposal, and Steve Wecker, Recreation Board Treasure, made a successful verbal presentation. Combined with previous grants, a total of $25,000 is now available and will be used to apply to other sources that require matching funds. Previously, the Olpe Down Home committee had given $3,500 and $2,000 came from the Emporia Community Foundation. Anyone who is interested in park improvements may make a donation to the Olpe Lions Club.
Olpe Church
receives grant
The Rev. Lucille Barb of the Olpe United Methodist Church recently received word that they were recipients of a grant from the Emil Babinger Trust to purchase tables and chairs for children, plus partitions and storage units for the new addition to the church. At present, the floors are being prepared for tile and the furnace is being installed. When complete, it will be an attractive and spacious facility for the Boy Scouts, All God’s Children, Vacation Bible School and other groups to meet. They would like to thank the community for their support in this effort.
Kansas Shrine Bowl
Jake Miller, Olpe senior has been selected to be one of 68 high school seniors to play in the 2007 Kansas Shrine Bowl. The game will be held on July 28, 2007 at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays, Kansas . Miller was selected by a mail ballot of 40 sports media professionals and Shrine Bowl coaching staff.
Authors of the month
The following authors were selected as the Olpe Elementary Authors of the Month: Garrett Pimple, Paul Michael Johnson, Kelsey Hendricks and Mckenzie Gulick. Congratulations to these students.
Family Reading Night
On February 16, 5:30 -7:30 p.m. Olpe elementary PTO is sponsoring a chili supper and Family Read Night. The Chili supper will take place in the school cafeteria. A free will donation will be accepted to benefit PTO projects. Everyone is invited to attend. For more information contact Debbie Dobony, 475-3644.
Junior High basketball
The Olpe Junior High Boys completed their season with a record of 10 wins and 4 losses. They also finished in second place playing in the championship game of the Lyon County Grade School League tournament. The Olpe Junior High girls finished the season with an 11-0 record. They also won the first place trophy in the Lyon County Grade School League tournament against the Lebo Wolves in the championship game.
