Aaron Clark led the way with two top-10 finishes for the Emporia High boys swimming team, which competed at the Manhattan Invitational on Saturday.
Clark finished fifth in the 100-yard freestyle finals in a time of 51.46 seconds, earning the Spartans’ top finish of the day. He also turned in a seventh-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 23.61 seconds to tie with Hays’ Henrik Schroeder.
Adam Coburn turned in the only other top-10 finish of the day for EHS, as he swam the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5 minutes, 44.69 seconds to place ninth.
EHS coach Bob Yevak said with his squad in the middle of a tapering cycle to prepare for the league and State meets, the Manhattan meet caught the Spartans at a bad time.
“We were definitely a little sluggish,” Yevak said. “We were off a little bit because of our taper, and there’s going to be a four or five day period where we are just a little off. But that’s OK. We’ll be ready for league.”
The Spartans’ best relay finish came at the end of the day, as the 400--yard freestyle relay team of Clark, Tyler Michales, Cord Stanley and Adam Coburn finished 10th in a time of 3:45.40.
Emporia’s 200-yard medley relay squad of Dillon Suprian, Michael Stauffer, Cody Yevak and Stanley finished 16th, while its 200-yard freestyle team of Michales, Scott Peterson, Miles Ringgold and Coburn finished in 1:46.21 to take 18th place.
Coburn turned in the final top-20 finish for the Spartans with an 18th-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:06.43.
The next action for the EHS swimming and diving squad will be the Centennial League meet, which begins on Thursday with diving and concludes on Friday with the swimming events.
“We’ll be ready to go on Friday,” Yevak said.
