Madison fends off Cair Paravel in 3 ots

Saturday, February 3, 2007

The Madison Bulldogs needed three overtimes but ended the night with an 80-76 victory over Cair Paravel Friday night at Madison.

The game was a physical battle, with the teams combining for 74 free-throw attempts. In addition, Cair Paravel had three players foul out.

“They didn’t have some of their best players at the end,” Madison coach Mike Pitko said. “They played real aggressive.”

Eric Porter led the Bulldogs with 23 points.

“He was the one who kept us in the ballgame sometimes,” Pitko said. “He was the glue tonight.”

Jordan Stout, the team’s leading scorer, continued to struggle offensively, but Pitko said Stout still was contributing.

“He’s struggled a bit with his shooting,” Pitko said. “He played well on defense and on the boards, but he didn’t get the fall-downs.”

The Council Grove boys basketball team outscored Northern Heights 31-10 in the fourth quarter in a 64-53 come-from-behind victory Friday night in Council Grove.

Northern Heights opened the game with a 21-8 run in the first quarter and maintained that lead through most of the game.

“Northern Heights came out early and put us on our heels,” Council Grove assistant coach Joshua Gant said. “We had to crawl out of a hole they put us in.”

Northern Heights was up by 10 heading into the fourth quarter.

“We got hot at the right time and were able to get ourselves back in the ballgame,” Gant said.

The Braves also played solid defense, allowing just 10 points in the fourth quarter.

“Our kids dug in on the defensive end to get some stops, so we weren’t just trading buckets,” Gant said.
