Emporia still has a voice in the nation’s crime policy.
On Friday, City Commissioner Tom Myers learned he had been reappointed to the National League of Cities’ steering committee for public safety and crime prevention. He is the only Kansan on the board, which he said has 35 to 40 members.
“It’s a hot committee,” Myers said. “This is the one that deals with disaster relief, terrorism, the interoperability of radio communications for law enforcement.”
It’s also the committee that discusses domestic-violence issues, a topic of special interest to Myers. Myers helped pass a city ordinance in 2005 to keep second-time domestic violence offenders from entering a diversion program to clear their records. He also supported a similar proposal at the state level.
The appointment is good for one year. This will be Myers’ second year on the steering committee.
