Big 2nd-quarter run Powers Osage City girls

The Osage City girls basketball team used a 22-6 first-quarter run to overpower Mission Valley in a 58-25 victory Friday night.

Osage City held Mission Valley to just four baskets — all scored by Vanessa Finley — with the other 17 points scored at the free-throw line.

Meanwhile, the Lady Indians only scored five points from the free-throw line and only went to the line eight times.

Katie Buenger led Osage City with 21 points, followed by Miranda Bryan with 17.

Council Grove girls 32, Northern Heights 25

The Council Grove girls team held Northern Heights to eight first-half points en route to a 32-25 victory Friday night at Council Grove.

Northern Heights shot only 20 percent from the field and was 1-of-13 from three-point territory. Meanwhile, Council Grove didn’t fare much better, shooting 28 percent from the field.

Tasha Messer led Council Grove with 11 points, while both Amy and Sarah Boline had six points each for Northern Heights.

The Lebo girls fell to Centre, 57-46, Friday night at Lebo.

Centre outscored Lebo, 14-6, in the second quarter, which was the largest scoring margin in a single period throughout the game.

Both teams combined for 40 free-throw shots, with Centre holding the 16-14 advantage in points scored from the charity line.

Freshman forward Morgan Laflin led the scoring for Lebo with 20 points.

Madison girls 45,

Cair Paravel 36

The Madison Lady Bulldogs defeated Cair Paravel, 45-36, in Friday night’s game in Madison.

Only down by four points at the start of the second half, Cair Paravel never gained enough composure to defeat the Lady Bulldogs, as Madison outscored Cair Paravel in each of the remaining two quarters.

Madison’s Morgan Stout and Shelby Buster carried the Bulldogs in their fight against Cair Paravel. Stout, who tied for the game-high, scored 16 points, while Buster followed close behind with 15 points.

Pomona girls 46,

Herington 43

Pomona used a fourth-quarter rally to push past Herington in the three-point victory.

The Lady Indians made their charge at the free-throw line, draining 9 of their 10 shots from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

“It pretty much sealed the game for them,” Herington coach Jayson Emig said.

Herington (7-7, 4-2) used a 10-4 third quarter run to take a 31-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Railers pulled to within one with 30 seconds remaining, but Pomona played keep away with the ball for 15 seconds before Kristin Kleinschmidt committed her fifth foul.

Pomona made both its free throws, and Herington failed to get a shot off on its final possession.

Kleinschmidt led Herington with 17 points. Crysta Brockmeier added 12, while Chanell Makovec contributed 10. Pomona’s Melissa Reed led all scorers with 20 points.
