An arraignment and pre-trial hearing is set for 4 p.m. March 7 in Lyon County District Court in the case of a man accused of the attempted first-degree murder of two Emporia police officers.
Juan Ruiz, 29, is accused of shooting at the officers during an incident on Dec. 7. He was bound over for trial after court testimony Wednesday and Thursday before District Judge Merlin Wheeler.
Ruiz allegedly shot at the two officers after one officer initially responded to a report of prohibited noise about 2:30 p.m. near Clark Street and Goura Place. Officer Scott Jones met a pickup matching the description of a vehicle involved in the noise call.
Jones chased the vehicle and the suspect, later identified as Juan Ramon Ruiz, drove his car into a church parking lot at 721 Corinth St. Ruiz stopped the truck, pointed a weapon at the officer, and opened fire.
Ruiz then fled in his truck to Peyton Street, where Officer Mark Lake joined Jones in the chase. Lake followed Ruiz south of the railroad tracks and drove east along an access road, where Ruiz stopped and allegedly fired shots at Lake. Ruiz then fled again. He was captured by Sheriff Gary Eichorn and Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Elwood Phelps after he left his truck and ran into Sertoma Park.
Ruiz was unarmed when he was taken into custody. Two guns were found about 100 feet from the truck, Williams said.
