Slick roads bring accidents, injuries

Thursday, February 1, 2007

A spate of non-injury accidents kept law enforcement officers busy around the city and county after Wednesday’s snowfall. However, injuries were reported in accidents on highways in the area.

An Emporia man was taken to Newman Regional Health after an accident Wednesday afternoon near Milepost 150 on the Kansas Turnpike.

Derrick S. Duncan, 38, received a head injury when he lost control of the 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck he was driving on a bridge. The pickup struck the embankment, overturned and came to rest in a ditch.

Duncan was wearing a seat belt.

Shortly before midnight, five people were injured when a mini van driven by Jose Ultrerras, 60, of Emporia rolled over on Highway 99 just north of Road 230.

According to information from the Lyon County Sheriff’s office, Ultreras was driving a 1987 Ford minivan when he lost control of the vehicle, drove off the road on the west edge, then slide on a snow-packed shoulder toward the east side of the highway. The van rolled over and came to rest on its top in the northbound lane, Deputy Eduardo T. Serrano said.

The injured were Elio Renteria, 28; Roxanna Ibarra, 24; Jesse Rodriguez, 50; and Rina Orellano, 27, all of Emporia, and Hector Soto of Council Grove.

All were taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment of unknown injuries.

Ultreras was not injured.
