A team challenge at Emporia Middle School ended last week with almost 2,700 canned and boxed food items to help local families.
The food drive was sponsored by Project QUEST, an after-school program at EMS. The six seventh- and eighth- grade teams competed to collect the most food items. At the conclusion of the contest, Team 8-3 was in first place with 927 donated items.
Students in Rebecca Goodman’s classroom helped QUEST Coordinator Dawn Young collect and count donations. They also tracked donations by team and posted results daily during a two-week period to keep the competitive spirit high.
Young said the goal was to collect enough food to help 60 families.
The food was donated to DCCCA Family Center, 115 W. Fifth Ave., a private agency that is contracted to provide Family Preservation Services in this region for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.
