Northern Heights wins emotional matchup over Wabaunsee, 73-46

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

Northern Heights kept its undefeated record intact with a 73-46 victory over Wabaunsee on Tuesday.

The Wildcats pulled away with an impressive fourth quarter. Heights used a 29-13 run in the final stanza to turn an 11-point lead into a 27-point blowout.

“We just wore them down and were able to get layups and blow the game open,” Heights coach Lanny Massey said.

Massey used his depth to his advantage, putting in 15 players — 10 of which scored.

Haydon Parks was nearly perfect from the floor, hitting 10-of-12 shots to finish with a game-high 22 points. Pete Symmonds pitched in double figures with 15.

Heights won despite hitting just 1 of its 13 three-point attempts (8 percent).

Seth Arndt made his only field goal and was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line to end with five points.

Seth is the brother of Beau Arndt, who was killed Saturday morning while hunting with friends in Lyon County.

A moment of silence was held before the game to remember Beau, who graduated from Heights in May.

Madison 67, Burlingame 43

The Madison boys got rolling in the second quarter of Tuesday night’s game against Burlingame, as the Bulldogs out-scored the Bearcats 16-4 on their way to a 67-43 victory in Madison.

The scoring surge put Madison ahead 35-19 at halftime, and the Bulldogs kept the Bearcats at bay after that.

“After the first quarter, we really turned up the intensity on defense, which was the key to us going into the half with a big lead,” Madison coach Alan Brown said. “After that, we just sustained our effort throughout the second half. Defensively, we caused them (Burlingame) a lot of problems.”

Eric Porter led Madison in scoring with a game-high 22 points, 15 of which came on his five 3-pointers.

“He was on fire,” Brown said. “He has a nice range. I was real pleased with his shooting from the field.”

Kaleb Schankie joined Porter in double figures with 11 points, while Michael Luthi and Caleb Hamilton each had eight for Madison (5-2, 2-2 Lyon County League). Burlingame was led in scoring by Chris Patterson’s 19 points. Patterson was the only Bearcat in double figures.

MdCV 55, Flinthills 51

The Marais des Cygnes Valley boys basketball team remained perfect on the season with a tightly contested 55-51 victory over Flinthills Tuesday night in Rosalia.

Marais des Cygnes Valley (5-0, 4-0 Lyon County League) had to fight to put things away late after getting out to a red-hot start.

The Trojans built a 13-0 lead to start the game before perhaps easing off the pedal too soon.

“We opened so well in the first three or four minutes,” Trojans coach Thad Thurston said. “Then, I think we hit cruise control a little too early.”

Flinthills eventually got on track and went into the second quarter down 19-11. The Mustangs then flipped the tables on the Trojans, out-scoring Marais des Cygnes Valley 19-11 in the second stanza to tie the game going into halftime at 30.

The second half was “a dog fight,” Thurston said, with the Trojans eventually getting enough offense from all over the court to hold off the Mustangs for the four-point victory.

Chisom Spencer led Marais des Cygnes Valley with 15 points, while Dennis Becker added 14.

Grant Vogt led Flinthills with 21 points, and Micah Womacks chipped in 12.

Cameron Smith had a monster night for Lebo, scoring 37 points on 15 field goals and a 7-for-7 performance from the free-throw line to lead the Wolves past Lyndon, 63-53.

Smith’s big game helped Lebo keep Lyndon at bay despite the Tigers doing their best to hang around.

Smith out-scored Lebo all on his own in the first quarter, 10-8, as Lebo took a 14-8 lead into the second quarter. The Wolves out-scored Lyndon in every quarter after that to slowly pull away for the 10-point victory.

Only four other players scored for Lebo besides Smith: Blake Jones and Adam Laflin each scored eight points, Dylan Smith chipped in five and Devin Johnston had one.

Lyndon was led by Quinton Testerman’s 12 points.
