Hall of fame gets funding

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

Congressman Jerry Moran today announced final approval of funding to implement teacher training and other development programs sponsored by the National Teachers Hall of Fame in Emporia. The funding was included in legislation that funds the Department of Education for 2008.

“Everyone can name at least one teacher that made a difference in their life,” Moran said. “This funding will not only help the Hall of Fame recognize those outstanding teachers who challenged and inspired us, but also prepare future teachers for classroom excellence.”

The Hall of Fame will receive $146,000 to be used for program activities that further its mission, including providing early career teachers with professional development and support. Data suggest that almost every other teacher that enters the profession leaves within the first three years. The Hall of Fame’s training programs are designed to help young teachers overcome the challenges new teachers face and become successful instructors. Funding will also be used for teacher retention and recruitment programs.

Glad to hear it. For too long, the Hall of Fame has been cutting back: a smaller site, a shorter schedule, fewer events. Maybe this can be the beginning of a turnaround.

Thankfully, people are beginning to recognize that our Hall of Fame needs help in becoming a true NATIONAL hall of fame for teachers! Thanks to Jerry Moran for working to get this great seed money. I hope to see the state legislature follow through on some support, and I really hope that everyone will support the Hall's new campaign to thank teachers... "One in a Million-- Teachers Who Make a Difference." Governor Sebelius recently referred to the NTHF as "a treasure of Kansas." I agree and hope that it will soon become a National Treasure!

This great idea has been fighting for survival for years. Might this be the final time government comes to the rescue. The union and commuity needs to get behind this if it is worth saving.
