Chase County rallies late to upend Waverly, 33-30

Chase County used a strong fourth quarter to edge Waverly, 33-30, on Tuesday in Cottonwood Falls.

Waverly led 28-25 heading into the final frame, but Chase County went on a 7-2 run in the final eight minutes to pull out the victory.

“The kids played hard and played very patient,” Chase County assistant coach Cammy Onek said. “If we played too quick, I think the game would have gotten away from us.”

The contest was tied with less than a minute left, but Chase County’s Kylee Scott hit a key basket to give her team the lead for good.

Robin Grokett led a balanced Chase County scoring attack with eight points. Aubrey Watts added seven.

Megan Steward and Brenna Wilson contributed nine points each for Waverly.

Madison 66, Burlingame 33

Madison’s Shelby Buster dominated inside, scoring a game-high 23 points in her team’s 33-point victory over Burlingame.

The sophomore was especially impressive in the third quarter, where she scored 14 points and made all four of her free-throw attempts.

She finished with 23 despite not scoring in the fourth quarter.

Madison out-scored Burlingame in every frame. The Lady Bulldogs used an 18-8 run to take a 31-16 halftime lead, then had a 22-8 spurt in the third quarter to make it 53-24.

Morgan Stout added 15 points, while Tera Titus (11) and Abby Kile (10) both hit double figures.

Miranda Fagan and Meghan Atchison paced Burlingame with 11 points each.

Lyndon 56, Lebo 44

After trailing early, Lyndon took control in the second quarter of Tuesday’s 12-point triumph over Lebo.

The Lady Tigers went on a 21-10 run in the second quarter — led by seven points during the span from Chelsea Schmitz — to turn a 9-8 deficit into a 29-19 halftime lead.

Lyndon held on from there, outscoring Lebo 16-11 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Schmitz led Lyndon, posting 16 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers. Krista Banzhaf added 14 points and two treys of her own.

Shelby Robke was Lebo’s high scorer, contributing 14 points with four 3-pointers. Morgan Laflin also hit double figures with 10.

Wabaunsee 47, Northern Heights 45

Northern Heights’ second-half rally came up just short, as Wabaunsee came away with a 47-45 victory on Tuesday in Allen.

“I am proud of our effort tonight,” Heights coach Tim Riemann said, “and the way that we continued to fight until the end.”

Wabaunsee led by four at half, but the Ladycats went on a 10-7 run in the third quarter to pull within one at 28-27.

Wabaunsee held Heights off in the final 8 minutes to secure the win.

“I thought we played well in the second half,” Riemann said, “but we needed to come out with a little more intensity.”

Sarah Boline had a team-high 12 points and three steals for the Ladycats. Amy Lee and Amy Boline contributed seven points each.

Heights (2-3) finished 15-of-45 from the field (33 percent) and 14-of-25 from the free-throw line (56 percent).
