Carjacking suspect held

One man is in jail following a carjacking and assault over the weekend in Emporia.

An Emporia Police Department press release said that officers were called at 3:30 a.m. Saturday to a crime in progress in the 400 block of East 10th Avenue. One of the two victims said he had been outside warming his car up when a man armed with a pistol had threatened them. The man took the car and drove off.

As officers were on their way, a call came in of an accident in the 800 block of Exchange Street. The description of the vehicle was similar to that of the stolen car. A witness said the driver of the car ran east on Eighth Avenue. Officers tracked footprints in the snow from Eighth Avenue and Exchange Street to the 1000 block of East Sixth Avenue.

Emporia State University police officer Kris Johnson found Edward L. Atkinson, 38, who matched the description of the robber, on the west side of the East Sixth Avenue viaduct. Atkinson ran back west and south into the Hopkins Manufacturing parking lot. Johnson chased him on foot. Officer Ray Mattas and Sgt. David DeVries of the Emporia Police Department saw the chase and joined it. Atkinson stopped running and surrendered.

Police said a pistol was found along the route of the chase.

Atkinson is being held in the Lyon County Jail.

Stealing a car at gunpoint, getting into a wreck within minutes? Then leaving footprints in the snow? This guy is a prime candidate for some Dumb Criminal of the Day contest.

What a bummer for the victim. The poor guy not only loses his car to a hijacking, but now it's wrecked too.
