ESU women’s tennis ranked No. 24 in poll
The Emporia State women’s tennis team will begin the 2008 season as the 24th-ranked team in the ITA rankings. ESU is the top-ranked MIAA school and one of only two conference teams in the top 40.
ESU’s doubles team of Marcela Bayon and Natalie Villaflor also is ranked No. 23 nationally in doubles. The pair went 5-0 to win the Wilson/ITA North Central Regional Championship in September before losing to three teams ranked in the top 12 at the ITA Small College Championships in October.
The ESU women advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in school history last Spring.
Wrestling Club competes in Gene White Memorial
Three members of the Emporia Kids Wrestling Club won titles in their respective weight classes and age groups last weekend during the Gene White Memorial tournament held at Emporia High School.
In the 6-year-old age group, Tagen Germann finished the day with a 2-0 record in the 49-pound weight class to finish first, while in the 8-year-old weight class, Isaac Williams at 55 pounds and Tyler Arndt at 61 pounds each took first place with 3-0 records.
Several other EWC wrestlers finished in second place. In the 6-year-old class, Luke Stone (67 pounds) and Dalton Leek (Heavyweight) took the runner-up spots. Gabe Buckbee at 49 pounds finished second in the 8-year-old age group. Blake Whitson at 82 pounds and Damian Herrera at 85 pounds each placed second in the 10-year-old division. Max Detwiler (76 pounds), Braxton Marstall (100 pounds) and Kolby Washburn (185 pounds) each took second in the 12-year-old age bracket.
Other wrestlers who placed were: Third place — Daniel Herrera (55 pounds, 8 years old), Hunter Williams (55 pounds, 8 years old), Izzy Trujillo (70 pounds, 10 years old), Issac Russell (82 pounds, 10 years old), Derek Korte (100 pounds, 10 years old) and Elu Granado (110 pounds, 12 years old).
Fourth place — Levi Korte (46 pounds, 6 years old), Skyler Miller (55 pounds, 6 years old), Ethan Garate (61 pounds, 6 years old), Markus Knight (64 pounds, 10 years old), Hayden Perry (130 pounds, 10 years old), Hunter Wing (84 pounds, 12 years old), Matt Urrutia (92 pounds, 12 years old) and Selena Rodriguez (110 pounds, 12 years old).
