Weather halts work

Construction on the roundabout by U.S. Highway 50 west of Emporia is essentially on hold until at least after the new year begins.

Nathan Anstey, engineering technology specialist with the Emporia office of the Kansas Department of Transportation, said contractors typically are off this time of year because of weather and the holidays.

“It started with the weather on Monday,” Anstey said. “We’re weather-related right now, and then next week, of course, at the end of the week will be the holidays. Then we go two weeks from there.”

Anstey estimated the roundabout is just over half complete. He said the day when all contractors would all return to work would be weather-dependent, but it would probably be within a week of Jan. 2.

“And there may be a few odds and ends that the contractors are able to do between now and then,” he said. “But there won’t be any large construction.”

Anstey said hourly contractors are typically off during this time, while the salaried workers usually stay on and attempt to help with traffic flow and wrap-up work.

“But for the most part, construction stops,” he said.

The project is scheduled for completion Nov. 14, 2008.
