Chase County and Cottonwood Falls is featured in a free novel that can be downloaded from the Internet.
The novel, “A Cowboy’s Christmas Prayer,” was written by Jack Zavada, who has published four western novels — “Rebel Town,” “The Wolfer,” “Penwhistle’s Prize” and “West of the Pecos.”
“A Cowboy’s Christmas Prayer” is set in Chase County in 1886 in a fictional town of Straight Down.
The book is about a struggling single mother, Gretchen Norgard, and a down-on-his-luck cowboy Pete Beckworth.
“Together they fight a ruthless businessman who is trying to take over Gretchen’s cafe,” Zavada said. “Readers will recognize the Grand Central Hotel and the courthouse in Cottonwood Falls. It’s always more interesting when there are local landmarks.
“I took some artistic license with a scene set in the Grand Central’s dining room,” Zavada said. “There are also courtroom scenes in the historic Chase County Courthouse.”
Zavada said he gave away a novel set in the Chicago suburbs and Wahoo, S.D., last year. The novel, “Mary’s Christmas Gift,” has more than 12,000 free downloads.
“I was shocked at the popularity of last year’s free novel,” he said. “So I decided to write another one this year. People seem to really enjoy a story with a touch of romance and an uplifting message. I found writing westerns to be great fun and everybody likes to get something free.”
The book can be downloaded at www.inspiration-for-singles.com/cowboy.html.
“The 84-page novel is free, with no strings attached,” Zavada said.
