Scribner goes beyond duty

It is difficult to pinpoint just one thing Shari Scribner does to make a difference. Scribner, a December recipient of the You Make a Difference Award, seems to make a difference in everything she does.

“She goes beyond her duty. She is kind, a great listener, all around good gal,” says Michelle Franklin, Scribner’s nominator.

Scribner began working at ESU Archives in June 2005. Her job involves many steps — collection, research, preservation. It seems to be the research aspect of her job that she enjoys most.

“I get to find out about all kinds of people, places, activities and subjects that I would not have any reason to research otherwise,” she says. “It is a thrill to find gems tucked away that no one has ever discovered and make those available to the public.”

Scribner also likes the connections that can be made through her work. “And everyday proves that everything is connected! People, organizations, the university community—almost every time a collection is processed we discover that it is connected in some way to another collection that seemed totally unrelated. Those connections are fun to discover.”

But Franklin would say that it is not just her connections in research that help Scribner make a difference, it is also her personal connections.

“She is very welcoming and works with our student employees to help them be all that they can be. When the students have plays, displays, concerts, etc. she shows an interest and attends those,” Franklin says.

Scribner enjoys the people she works with, especially the students. She says, “The Archives has also been blessed with some great student employees. It is a pleasure to get to know them, watch them, watch the successes they have in their lives, and witness how their talents, scholarship, and work strengthen Emporia State University.”

Those who work with her consider Scribner an incredibly valuable asset to their team. Says Franklin, “Shari is a rock- solid foundation for us. So encouraging and she makes it an absolute pleasure to come to work each day.”
