REG Emporia, LLC, now has five extra months to finish its new biodiesel plant. But as construction continues, REG’s chief operating officer says the target time to begin production — fall 2008 — hasn’t changed.
Daniel Oh, the COO of REG, said Wednesday that construction crews have been setting structural steel and placing biodiesel production vessels.
In the Emporia City Commission’s action meeting Wednesday morning prior to its work session, the commission unanimously approved an amendment to the incentive compliance agreement between the city and REG.
The amendment extended the deadline for completion of the plant by five months, from March 31, 2009, to Aug. 31, 2009.
Oh said REG still plans to have production started by fall 2008, “but we requested an extension just to be careful.” He said the extra time will give REG time to lay off its increases in raw material costs and to deal with inclement weather.
“We wanted as much time as possible, because it’s a complex and expensive and long plan to put in place,” Oh said.
Oh said portions of the building that have been completed include structural underpinnings, tank footings, and the administrative building.
The plant will be designed to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will produce 60 million gallons per year of biodiesel fuel and employ more than 30 full-time workers.

Why is it that they say everything is on track, yet there is only one crew working? The workers from the other crews are saying REG is out of money. Anyone know what is really going on?
