Discussion at the Wednesday Lyon County Commission meeting briefly centered around the speed limit on Road U near the site of Emporia Energy, the peaking power plant being built by Westar Energy.
Tension was high at times about the speed limit near the peaking plant where the road is now black-topped. Larry Hall, who lives on the stretch of Road U, said he watches traffic whiz up and down that road every day as workers come in and leave. The speed limit is set at 35, which was posted before the road was paved.
“We already got one little white cross out there,” Hall said. “Do you want more?”
Going off of County Engineer Chips Woods’ suggestion, commissioners talked about the possibility of taking down the speed limit signs and raising the limit to 55 miles per hour without posting new signs.
“You can leave it at 55,” Miller said. “You don’t post it but it’s understood at 55.”
Another possibility commissioners kicked around was posting a 45 mile per hour limit. Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods suggested speed limit not be changed back and forth until after construction is complete.
“Otherwise you are just going to be moving signs around,” Woods said.
Commissioners put the item on today’s agenda for further discussion and possible action.
