Hornet moves up

An Emporia State University grad is the new chief counsel for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Vicky Johnson was named to that position earlier this month, said Deb Miller, secretary of transportation for the department.

Johnson, who earned an undergraduate degree in public affairs from Emporia State, received her law degree from the University of Kansas, where she also completed a master’s degree in public administration. She has worked for the department’s Office of Chief Counsel for 24 years.

Before her promotion, Johnson was a staff attorney responsible for litigation and condemnation issues.

Restaurant snuffs smoking

La Hacienda restaurant, 1115 W. Sixth Ave., has gone smoke-free.

In a news release from the Lyon County Health Department, Carlos Santana, La Hacienda’s manager, is quoted as saying that the change was in response to customers’ requests.

The health department offers information for business-owners who wish to make the switch to a smoke-free environment; interested people may call 342-4864, Ext. 201.

A list of smoke-free businesses is available to those who leave their name and address by voice mail at the same number.
