Dog nabs suspect who flees from officer

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

A man about to be taken to jail on drug charges Tuesday learned that he could not outrun the Lyon County K-9 Unit.

Deputy Cory Doudican stopped a vehicle for excessive speed and failure to signal a lane change about 10:23 a.m. at Milepost 128 on Interstate 35.

“I became suspicious of criminal activity, asked for consent to search and was denied,” Doudican said.

He deployed his partner, Police Service Dog Tito, who responded with an “alert indication” to the vehicle.

The driver and a passenger, both believed to be from out-of-state, were outside the vehicle.

“When I went to take (the passenger) into custody, he fled by foot towards a residential area in a business area,” Doudican said. The man ignored the deputy’s orders to stop.

“The dog was deployed from the vehicle while I was in pursuit,” Doudican said. “...Tito apprehended him.”

Charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, felony possession of drug paraphernalia, and no drug tax stamp are pending. The passenger may be charged with an additional charge of felony obstruction of official duty, Doudican said.

Names of the suspects were not yet available.
