I love the complaints of college students, we all drove to work today too, work was not cancelled, the roads are not horrible and with safe driving you should be fine. Just remember in the "real world" that you guys are about to graduate in to, work does not get cancelled, no matter what the weather.

Who is complaining? I think the only problem is someone who did not read the email that was sent to students yesterday and posted on here last night that classes were cancelled. The email was for instructions IF finals were cancelled.
But, who is complaining?

The person who DJ was commenting about has been removed as a user based on numerous posts that used profanity.

I saw the original post. I do not recall that it contained any profanity. I do know the poster called the president of the university a moron for not closing the university. That does not strike me as profane, but as opinion, which, as I recall, is protected speech under the First Amendment.
Besides, should the Gazette be editing the posts (and posters) if it claims that "Responsibility for what is posted or contributed to this site is the sole responsibility of each user?"
Seems to me the Gazette could be risking a lawsuit.

Dear tmac,
Please read the full User Poster Agreement Policy. The comments brought several requests for removal from users who also were offended.
I will not restate the offending language. Be assured that it had nothing to do with being critical about President Lane.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to e-mail me directly at larson@emporiagazette.com.

You can't claim "freedom of speech" when you leave a comment on a businesses website and they delete it, nor can you sue them over it. That's silly.

Why did a simple statement of closings and cancellations turn into gazette bashing? Of course the gazette takes the side of the university; it is in the gazettes best interest! Plus without the university, emporia would be down, what, 10,000 in population and out thousands in income. the definition of journalism is: the occupation of reporting, writing, editing, photographing, or broadcasting news or of conducting any news organization as a business. I am pretty sure that the gazette does all of that. If you don't like it than don't read it, then you won't have anything to be so upset about.

On what grounds should ESU have been closed today? I had no problem getting around safely today, nor did I see any accidents while I was out. I'm sure there were some, but not enough to warrant closing the university. A very large percentage of students are within reasonable walking distance to the campus or are already living on campus. If as a university student you do not wish to attend your classes, then don't go. I doubt if your instructors with call your parents and report your truency.

I actually thought it was a shame that the Emporia School District closed up shop...I'm not sure it was really justified in the end. But for some reason, the school districts make their decisions much earlier than the University does.

Early decisions by the school districts due partly to early preparations for the rural bus routes that the college does not have. Also, you have to give parents with young kids not able to stay home alone a chance to arrange something since the kids are not in school, an issue which the college does not face

That makes a lot of sense, Pacifier. Oh well...my child really enjoyed the day off, & was hoping the rest of the week would be cancelled as well. ;)

That said, one of my friends managed to get herself to ESU to take her final.
Her professor didn't show up.

All the talk of whether ESU should have closed brings me back to my freshman year at KU. I chose to sleep through my morning classes (and no, my parents weren't notified) and was getting dressed for my 12:30 when my roommate walked in and told me classes were cancelled for the afternoon because of a snowstorm.
My response: College is closed? You don't close college!
I figured I lived on campus and could walk to classes. My roommate's explanation: All the professors have to drive onto campus, which sits on a hill. If profs can't get there, there are no classes.
I was still amazed. But every one of my four years, KU closed at least one day for weather.
