The Emporia State indoor track and field teams took home four championships and also had one provisional qualifier during the Kansas State All-Comers and Iowa State Cyclone Holiday Preview Meets on Saturday.
Damon Birk had the most impressive Hornet performance, winning the shot put competition at KSU by more than 7 inches with a toss of 53 feet, 10.5 inches.
Birk’s throw topped second-place finisher Tom Pappas, who was the 2003 World Outdoor Decathlon Champion.
The mark provisionally qualifies Birk for the National meet.
“Damon’s shot put was the highlight of the weekend and was a (personal record),” ESU coach David Harris said. “The mark topped the performance that took Trent Olivier to Nationals last year at Boston, so we feel real good about (Damon’s) chances.
“It is a long season, and Damon is capable of much longer throws.”
Jaclyn Sill and Skyler Delmott both put together strong showings at the ISU meet in Ames, Iowa.
Sill won the 400-meter run, finishing in a time of 58.12 seconds, while Delmott took first in the men’s 3,000-meter run after posting a time of 8:52.58.
ESU’s other win came from Josh Honeycutt, who won the long jump competition at KSU. The freshman jumped 22 feet, 7.75 inches in his first collegiate meet.
Matt Koelling had the other top-three performance for ESU, taking third in the triple jump (46 feet, 2 inches).
The Hornet indoor track teams will take nearly six weeks off before competing in the KSU Wildcat Invitational on Jan. 18-19.
“My only concern now is that (the athletes) will maintain their shape in the next four weeks while they are away from their coaches and teammates. But it is not a new concern — it has been the same for 16 years at ESU,” Harris said. “We will send training programs home and hope they do them.
“Motivation, weather, facilities all play a part in how they return the second week of January.”
