K-State graduation
Sarah Priest of Emporia, senior in music education at Kansas State University in Manhattan sang the national anthem at the Dec. 8 commencement ceremony for the College of Education.
Aaron Miller of Emporia graduated Dec. 8 from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He is the, son of Ted and Donna Miller of Emporia.
Other degree candidates from Emporia were Jay Thomas Aber, bachelor of science in civil engineering; Elita M Baldridge, bachelor of science; Roger Lavern Caswell, doctor of philosophy; Joshua James Gentry, bachelor of science; Paul Evan Hartley, bachelor of science in agriculture; Justin Lee Mahan, bachelor of science in construction science and management; Emily Catherine Pientka, bachelor of science; Ana Lee Sulentic, bachelor of science; Rosamaria Celina Magallanez, bachelor of science; and Cody Lee Ziegler, bachelor of science in family studies and human services.
Emporia High debate
Chase Miller and Alex Bonnet have qualified for the national high school policy debate championships in May at Appleton, Wis.
Miller and Bonnet, seniors at Emporia High School, qualified recently during the Kansas City Region of the National Catholic Forensics League tournament at EHS. Twenty-three teams throughout the region competed for the qualification openings.
EHS sophomores Kathryn Scherich and Drew Bonnet lost a close final decision to a team from Blue Valley West, according to coach Scott Bonnet.
EHS freshmen Ariana Nasrazadani and Zach Windsor also competed in the tournament.
EHS has a history of qualifying debaters for the national tournament. Alex Bonnet and Mary Yanik, who graduated this spring, finished ninth in the national tournament in May. Paul Mose and Zara Nasrazadani placed third in the nationals two years ago.
The NCFL, one of two major national governing organizations for high school debate, is dominated by private academics and preparatory schools from the East.
KU scholarships
More than 5,400 students at the University of Kansas will receive about $26 million in privately funded scholarship support during the 2007-08 academic year. This is a 10.6 percent increase from the 2006-07 school year, in which KU students received $24.3 million in scholarship support. From Emporia are:
