Man indicted for airport burglaries

Saturday, December 8, 2007

A Hutchinson man involved in airport burglaries in four states has been charged in a federal indictment issued in Kansas City, Kan.

Michael S. Wagner, 26, is accused of taking laptop computers, hard drives, aviation headsets, cameras, GPS receivers, rifles and pistols, tools, radios and televisions, according to information from Jim Cross, public information officer for U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren in Wichita.

Included in the indictment was a charge for the Jan. 22, 2006, burglary at the Emporia Municipal Airport.

Wagner was arrested Jan. 22, 2006, after Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies discovered a fence at the airport had been cut, and found Wagner in a nearby vehicle.

A search warrant executed the following day by the Federal Bureau of Investigation found a variety of stolen items.

“Investigators determined that some of the stolen merchandise was sold on eBay and buyers paid by mailing money through the U.S. Postal Service,” Cross said in a news release.

Wagner is charged with three counts of interstate transportation of stolen property, two counts of wire fraud, and two counts of mail fraud.

The FBI and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, Cross said.
