Hartford rallies to beat B-game

Saturday, December 8, 2007

Hartford made up a nine-point halftime deficit, rallying for the 54-48 victory over Burlingame.

The Jaguars used a 16-7 third-quarter run to tie it, then out-scored Burlingame 17-11 in the final stanza.

“Our team defense in the second half was outstanding,” Hartford coach Chuck Ewy said.

Burlingame, meanwhile, never fully recovered from the loss of its point guard Chris Walker. The senior left with an injury in the second quarter. After that, Burlingame played primarily with a six-man rotation.

“We had trouble finding the bucket,” Burlingame coach Creighton Winters said. “They just wore us down.”

The Bearcats shot just two free throws in the second half of a game that Winters said was one of the most physical he’d ever seen.

Taylor Heckathorn led Hartford with 22 points, while Justin Farr added 10. Adam Ewy also added three fourth-quarter steals that helped seal the win.

Chris Patterson was the leading scorer for Burlingame with 19 points. Joel Bevitt contributed double figures with 10.

The Trojans out-scored the Tigers 20-9 in the third quarter to turn a 25-23 deficit into a 43-34 lead.

“At halftime, we talked about slowing things down and being more deliberate offensively,” MdCV coach Thad Thurston said. “We were more effective doing that.”

MdCV (3-0) also was effective when getting it to their big guys inside.

Chisom Spencer led the way with 20 points, while fellow forward Dennis Becker added 18.

Madison 60, Lebo 54

The Madison boys held their composure and also held on against Lebo, keeping their fourth-quarter lead in a six-point victory.

The Bulldogs led 43-33 heading into the fourth quarter when the ghosts of Tuesday started to dance in their minds.

On that day, Madison surrendered a 24-point lead in a 59-55 loss to Olpe.

“I told our players, ‘Gentleman, just remember,’” Madison coach Alan Brown said.

The Bulldogs heeded the warning, holding their own at the end of Friday’s game.

Eric Porter hit 4 of 4 free throws in the fourth quarter, while Michael Luthi hit 3 of 4 and reserve player Kale Schankie was 2-for-4.

Brown also credited Henry Ott, who took over ball-handling duties after starters Kaleb Schankie and Caleb Hamilton fouled out.

Kaleb Schankie ended as Madison’s high scorer with 19 points. Porter added 16, while Luthi had 13.

Lebo’s Blake Jones led all scorers with 27 points, which included four 3-pointers.

Northern Heights 47, Herington 34

In a physical and sloppy game, Northern Heights built a first-half lead and coasted in the 13-point victory.

The Wildcats started the game with a 14-5 first-quarter run then extended that advantage to 27-13 at the break.

“Neither team had a good night,” Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “We played very good defense but were not able to convert on the offensive end the way we would like.”

Haydon Parks finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Pete Symmonds was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 12 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the field.
