Marijuana, methamphetamine and cash from drug proceeds were seized during the past week by Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputy Cory Doudican and his K-9 assistant Tito.
On Monday, Nov. 26, the K-9 unit was called to assist the Kansas Highway Patrol on the turnpike.
“Tito indicated to the vehicle,” Doudican said.
The dog’s nose had located 95 pounds of marijuana that had been hidden in metal boxes inside the gas tank.
Twelve grams of methamphetamines were found during a traffic stop Thursday in the 700 block of Watson Street, and on Friday, the pair assisted Osage County Sheriff’s Deputy Wally Long at a car stop on Interstate Highway 35.
“Tito indicated to that, too,” Doudican said.
The officers subsequently dismantled a false compartment in a pickup and found 58 pounds of marijuana inside.
This week, Doudican conducted a traffic stop at Milepost 129 southbound on Interstate 35. Tito again indicated to the vehicle and also later to the currency inside when it was tested in a neutral setting.
As a result, Doudican seized about $16,000 in drug proceeds.
The suspect, a Nebraska man, had been arrested here in 2000 by Deputy Daniel Knowles for possession of marijuana with intent to sell.

You know what, Mr. C? You had me, for the most part, until the part about cannabis and HIV.
It's a negative agenda, on that site.
Nice try.

et tu, MelissaE?
MrC was not trying to push any agenda. HE was merely pointing out the staggering cost (in dollars) of OUR war on drugs. It was a response to the comment made by emporian:
"Let's get Emporia PD a drug dog and get in on this drug forfeiture money."
It's a fair comment and MrC doesn't mean to pick on emporian for stating it. Though visions of black-booted Gestapo armed with German Shepherds and sub-machine guns does come to mind whenever it is suggested that we arm our local police with similar weapons We do not portend THAT was emporian's intent.
It's real simple:
The "Office of National Drug Control Policy," which is an elective office of the President of the United States stated that, "The U.S. federal government spent over $19 billion dollars in 2003 on the War on Drugs, at a rate of about $600 per second. The budget has since been increased by over a billion dollars."
"State and local governments spent at least another 30 billion" according to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. That's somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,000 per second.
The link MrC provided just shows what OUR dollars look like ticking away by the second. It's the first site offered when Googling "drug war costs" and we found it thought provoking.
Take what ya want from it; it's no beans to MrCmonkeeDo.
