Sunday in Melvern
The Melvern Community Pride will host a Sunday Dinner at the community center from 11:30 until 1:00 on December 9. The menu will be barbecue meatballs, baked potato, corn, bread and a dessert, all for a suggested donation of $6. Why go home and cook after church? The Emporia State University Student National Art Education Association is having a fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Flinthills Mall to raise money for rebuilding libraries in New Orleans and to send ESU students to the NAEA national conference, also in New Orleans. There will be face painting, a bake sale and crafts sale, along with Christmas tags and cards for sale. Students also will take monetary and book donations for the libraries.
Stocking the pantry
Rollers will help the local food bank during December and January by collecting food donations every Saturday night. Anyone bringing three cans of food on Saturday nights can skate for free from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Skate rental will cost $2. Traditionally, donations to food banks slow down after November and December, according to Kelly Maxfield of Rollers. “The food drive will continue until the end of January to help fill this void,” Maxfield said.
Holiday meal
The North Lyon County Recreation Committee will serve a holiday dinner from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sun day at the youth association building in Allen. Meals cost $5 for adults, $4 for children and free for babies. Families participating in the recreation programs are donating the food for the meal. Funds raised will build up the committee’s treasury to pay for sports equipment like batting helmets, basketballs, wrestling head gear and ball bags. The recreation committee sponsors youth sports year-round — soccer in the fall and spring, girls and boys basketball and wrestling in the winter and baseball and softball in the summer.
