A head-on collision between a Freightliner semi-tractor trailer and a Kia passengert vehicle resulted in the death of one woman and injuries to another.
According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Melissa Kay Thomas, 45, of Edwardsville, died in the accident. She was driving the 2004 Kia north on Interstate Highway 35 about eight miles east of Emporia, when she lost control of the vehicle. The Kia left the highway, crossed the median, went into the oncoming lane and struck the 2007 Freightliner head-on. The icy roadway is believed to be a factor in causing the Kia to leave the roadway.
Thomas, who was wearing a safety restraint, was taken to the Shawnee County Coroner’s office in Topeka.
The driver of the semi, Terry L. Hamilton, 48, of New Boston, Ohio, was not injured. A passenger, Roberta J. Hamilton, 49, of New Boston, was taken to Newman Regional Health, where she was treated and released, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Both Hamiltons were wearing safety restraints.
The fatal accident was one of three accidents reported to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office within 40 minutes in that area of I-35. No injuries were reported in the other two accidents.
