Vote for change

ANYONE WHO attended the community meeting at the auditorium Wednesday night regarding the Somali refugee issue would not have to guess how a large number of Emporians feel about this highly emotional issue.
However, the question remains, “what can be done about it?”
What became extremely clear was the obvious fact that this is a prime opportunity for citizen involvement in the important issues of the day. When citizens become concerned about a particular problem in their community, it is very important to realize that they have a powerful tool with which to institute change and that tool is their VOTE.
Put elected officials on notice! Whether they are local city or county commissioners, state or national senators or representatives, If their votes do not reflect the wishes of the people, “kick the bums out.” Get involved in the political process. Call, email or write letters to your elected representatives and respectfully express your opinions. Grassroot efforts are extremely effective and there is power in numbers. Be an educated voter. When there is an election such as will be held in 2008, find out where the candidates stand on issues that are important to you. As a legal citizen, register to vote and then exercise your RIGHT TO VOTE. Your one vote does count!
These are the most effective steps you can take to make changes. Edmund Burke is quoted as saying, “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil in the world is for good men to do nothing.” Apathy allows anarchy . Active involvement results in change.
