Burlingame gets past Waverly again behind Patterson's 26 points

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

After winning Round One against Waverly last Thursday, the Burlingame boys took Round Two on Tuesday, defeating the Bulldogs, 55-44, in the two teams’ second matchup of the early season.

Burlingame found success by fixing its mistakes from the first meeting. The Bearcats gave up only seven offensive rebounds Tuesday after allowing 17 in the two teams’ first game.

Burlingame also was much better from the free-throw line, making 17 of its 26 attempts. The Bearcats went 12-for-27 from the charity stripe Thursday.

Waverly came out prepared to face Burlingame, taking a 13-12 lead after the first quarter.

Burlingame grabbed the advantage for good shortly after that, going on an 11-5 run in the second quarter and out-scoring the Bulldogs in every other period.

Chris Patterson led Burlingame, scoring 26 points with a perfect 10-for-10 performance from the free-throw line. Chris Walker also added nine.

Mason Fleming was the leading scorer for Waverly with 11.

Hartford took a comfortable first-half lead and never looked back in a 14-point victory over Flinthills.

“Our offensive production was really consistent,” Hartford coach Chuck Ewy said.

Palermo’s main competition points-wise came from the Tigers’ Derek Banzhaf, who scored 19 points.

The game went down to the wire, but in the end, it was the Trojans who came out on top with a three-point victory.

At halftime, the Trojans held a slight advantage over Lebo at 20-16, but the Wolves never could overcome the deficit, especially with Lebo’s leading scorer, Adam Laflin (17 ppg), out for undisclosed reasons.

“It was a tough win,” MdCV coach Thad Thurston said. “Both teams played really well.”

Cameron Smith had a strong game for Lebo (3-1), leading his team with 11 points while Blake Jones had 9.

Dennis Becker led MdCV on the scoreboard with 18 points.

“We didn’t keep him (Becker) off the boards as well as we should have,” Lebo coach Matt Barrett said. “He had 18 points, two of those were free throws and eight more were second-chance points.”
