United Way drive pushes closer to goal

Larie Schoap, drive chair for the United Way’s annual fundraising drive, gives an update on how the campaign is going. The United Way funds programs in 23 area social service agencies. Some agencies that receive funding are the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Emporia Child Care, just to name a few.

Q How much time is left in the fundraising campaign to reach your $610,000 goal?

A Right now we have raised just over $530,000 and we have till the end of the year to wrap it up. We still have some packets out and we are encouraging businesses to turn them in. We have made another push to get people to make a donation to the United Way in hopes of meeting our goal. We are just urging everyone to give to the United Way.

Q Why is reaching the goal important?

A It’s important because of the agencies that receive the funding. It makes a stronger community when we do what we can to assist those agencies’ programs.

Q What is an appropriate amount to give?

A Any amount is helpful and it is what people feel comfortable with. Some like to give what we call a Fair Share, which is one hour’s salary a month. But if that is not comfortable, we are grateful for any amount. If someone has never given but has questions please call the United Way office and talk with Duane Dreiling.

Q What have you been most proud of during the campaign?

A I have been really proud of the people who have stepped up and worked very hard to assist the United Way. There are also some companies that completely surpassed their goal and they worked hard to do it. I really appreciate their effort and support.

Q Most people are encouraged to give at work. How are you reaching people who don’t work or are retired?

A We have sent out solicitation letters asking for donations. If you want to give and we have not contacted you please call the United Way office at 342-7564.

Encouraged? Some get their arms twisted.
