For Bing Xu and his family, moving into Sunflower Meadows, a new housing addition located off Riley Avenue and Burlingame Road, was an opportunity to raise a young family in a small, quiet and friendly neighborhood.

Xu’s family includes two small children; the youngest is only a few weeks old. Xu said his family was the third to move into the new addition.

“We like it here,” Xu said. “It’s a nice place to start a family. We like the area and the people living here are nice.”

The housing addition has entered its second phase of development, and with that will come an additional 22 homes — three of which are well on their way to completion already.

Joel Phipps of Remax Select Realtors talked about the development on a recent morning. The first phase has 15 homes completed, he said as he stood among the three nearly-completed homes on one of the new streets, Sunflower Way. Two other streets have been constructed and are ready for homes — Buffalo Terrace and Red Wheat Drive.

Construction on the housing addition started in the spring of 2006, Phipps said. The homes, which come in several different floor plans, range from 900 to just under 1,300 square feet. Most of the homes are three bedrooms with two baths and a full basement. About 30 percent of the homes are two bedrooms with two baths and a full basement.

Phipps talked about some of the homes that are nearing completion in the second phase. The layout differs in each of the three homes. Each have laundry facilities upstairs and the bedrooms and bathrooms are upstairs also. The size of the kitchen and living areas vary by floor plan and number of bedrooms.

In the basement of each home, which is left unfinished unless the buyer requests it be finished, is plumbing for another bathroom. Phipps said the basement, which spans the entire length of the homes, could easily add another bedroom or other uses. Each of the basements also has an “escape” window.

Phipps said the homes are priced between $110,000 and $145,000 with an average home price of between $130,000 and $135,000. He said sales of the homes are going well.
