On board with Scouts

Three Emporia businesswomen are serving as at-large members of the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland’s board of directors. The three, Alice Nida, Candy Johnson and Sharon Woods, are among 22 members who live in the 80 counties represented by the council.

Nida, a lawyer, serves as a member of the advisory board for Emporia Presbyterian Manor; she is also on the board of the American Association of University Women and is a past president of Hi-Noon Kiwanis.

Johnson, interlibrary loan supervisor at Emporia State University’s William Allen White Library, has worked extensively with Girl Scouts, including a term as board president for the Girl Scouts of the Flint Hills Council in Emporia.

Woods, ESU’s director of payroll, also served on the board for the Flint Hills Council. She is active in Altrusa International of Emporia and is a past member and former officer of the Emporia Sertoma Club.

Woods was a member of the human resources subcommittee during the merger of the Flint Hills Council with councils from Garden City, Hays, Hutchinson, Salina and Wichita. The new council, which began operations on Oct. 1, serves more than 16,000 girls and 5,000 adults in 80 Kansas counties.

Serve as directors

Two Emporia-area men have been elected to membership in the executive committee of the Kansas Electric Power Cooperative.

Robert Reece, manager of the Flint Hills Rural Electric Cooperative Association in Council Grove, and Scott Whittington, manager of Lyon-Coffey County Electric Cooperative in Burlington, were elected during the group’s executive meeting in November in Wichita.

At that meeting, Kenneth J. Maginley of Wamego was re-elected to serve as president. He is the general manager of Bluestem Electric Cooperative in Wamego.

The Kansa organization, headquartered in Topeka, has 19 member distribution cooperatives that serve approximately 300,000 rural Kansans.

Carver’s work wins ribbons

Millard Harrell of Foundwood Carvings in Emporia captured several blue ribbons at the Kaw Valley Woodcarving Show, held last month in Topeka.

Harrell’s awards came for his work “Ol’ Flint” in the Instructor Assisted or Seminar Carving category, “Gone Hunt’n” in the Bark Carving Category and “Original Frosted Over Santa – 2007” in the Christmas Item Category. Gerald Copeland was the instructor for the “Ol’ Flint” work. He also won a third-place ribbon for “Gone Golf’n,”

A total of 52 carvers entered works in 29 categories during the show, which was judged by Hugh Beckham, a woodcarver from Glen Haven, Colo.

Harrell’s work may be seen on his Web site, www.foundwoodcarvings.com.

Ribbon to be cut

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday will herald the opening of Pizza Hut WingStreet, 2920 W. 18th Ave.

The restaurant, which officially opened on Nov. 26, will offer a sample of its 152 wing items during the ceremony.

Staff will look for the “Wackiest Wing Eater” in Emporia at a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The winner will receive free wings for one year, according to a news release from Krystal Riffel, marketing manager at NPCInternational in Overland Park. Both Pizza Hut and WingStreet are subsidiaries of YUM! Brands Inc.

A number of promotions are planned during the restaurant’s grand-opening week. Discounts will apply throughout the week and wing samplings periodically will be included with carryout and delivery orders, Riffel said.

Josh Wolff is the general manager of the restaurant, which is open for dining in from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Carry-out hours are 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.
