Pats on the Back

Friday, August 31, 2007

Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. Give these folks a pat on the back ...

MENU Foods and the DeBauge Banquet Boys, the teams that won the 2007 Corporate Challenge. Menu won the Competitive division, followed by Team Hopkins and the city of Emporia. DeBauge won the fun division, followed by Pro Print and BB Quick.

• Organizers who coordinated a benefit concert for Brandon Ayers, who has an arteriovenous malformation. Nearly $5,000 was raised and donations still are welcome.

• Emporia Main Street, which has organized two downtown cleanups. The events will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 7 and 8 a.m. Oct. 13

• Wheat State Pizza, which is now opening two more locations. One will be in Springfield, Mo., while the other is slated for Salina.

• All of the 150 people who took part in this year’s ALS walk. The event raised $12,000.

• KanBuild, which has been helping Greensburg rebuild from the tornado that leveled the town in May.

• The Emporia High soccer team, which opened its season in strong form with a 3-0 win over soccer power Wichita Northwest. EHS had never beaten Northwest before.

• Levi Lapping, who showed just how much a teen is capable of over the summer. Lapping’s summer included training sessions with the Civil Air Patrol, the Air Force Academy, the Royal Air Force ... and a trip to wrestling camp to round things out.

• Clint Bowyer, the Emporia native, who pulled off his best-ever finish in a Nextel Cup series race last weekend. Bowyer finished third in the Sharpie 500 at Bristol, Tenn.

• Eric McCabe, who dominated the Glass Blown Open disc golf tournament in Emporia, a Super Tour tournament. McCabe finished 29-under-par and won by 11 strokes.
