Everything went right for the Emporia Middle School Vikings “A” team Thursday afternoon as they rolled to their first victory over the visiting Lawrence West Warhawks, 46-0.
The Emporia offense needed only 30 plays to compile 147 yards, score six touchdowns and tally 46 points.
Austin Knight ran for 63 yards on eight carries and scored four touchdowns. Derek Gifford added another 57 yards on 10 carries and two PATs. Collin Thompsen ran for a touchdown and caught the game’s only completed pass for a two-point conversion.
Emporia held the Warhawk offense to negative yardage, recovered two fumbles and piled up five quarterback sacks. Leading the defense was Derek Hardig with 13 tackles, three sacks and a safety and Thompsen, who contributed nine tackles and a quarterback sack.
The Vikings travel to Manhattan next Thursday to take on the Eisenhower Eagles.
The EMS “B” squad lost a heartbreaker against the Burlington “A” team, 12-6. With 12 seconds left in the game and the score tied at 6, the Viking defense was unable to hold the Wildcats out of the end zone, as Burlington scored on a sweep to take the lead for good.
Jerry Parks and Bryce Dakin each racked up six tackles to pace the EMS defense. Brady Marstal added six tackles and an interception. Matt Manuel grabbed five tackles and two quarterback sacks.
The “B” team will play the Eisenhower Eagles next Thursday in Manhattan.
