Angel food scheduled, price up by $3 for sales tax

Friday, August 31, 2007

The state of Kansas has imposed a $3 increase in the cost of Angel Food boxes. The increase was necessitated after the state notified three local churches that sales tax must be charged on the food.

Order times have been scheduled for September deliveries at the churches.

There are no eligibility requirements to participate. With the purchase of one box of food, buyers also can purchase bonus boxes of meats and other items at special prices.

The Emporia Church of the Nazarene, 2931 W. 24th Ave., will finish taking orders on Wednesday from 2 to 7 p.m.; Thursday and Friday from 2 to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cash, money orders and food stamps will be accepted and payment must be made when the order is placed.

Because of timing of food stamp distributions, however, the church has made an exception for people who want to pay with food stamps. They may place orders any day at the church office between 9 a.m. and noon on Mondays through Thursdays.

The First Presbyterian Church, 802 Commercial St., will accept orders from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Orders at Grace United Methodist will be finished from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Each basic food box will contain: Four pounds of frozen chicken leg quarters, 24 oz. beef back ribs, 1 lb. 80/20 lean ground beef, 2 lbs. breaded chicken tenders, four 6-oz. bone-in pork chops, 1 lb. ground turkey, 18 oz. stuffed cheese manicotti, 12 oz. smoked sausage, Betty Crocker seasoned potatoes, 7-oz. cheeseburger dinner, 16 oz. green beans, 1 lb. baby carrots, 2 lb. onions, 1 lb. pinto beans, 1 lb. rice, 7 oz. blueberry muffin mix, 10-count homestyle waffles and one dessert item.

Bonus boxes of meat may be ordered along with a primary box. The cost of the bonus boxes also has increased $2 per box. Details on contents are available at the churches.

Boxes must be picked up at the times specified. Those not claimed at the distribution will be donated to others in need.

Each participant needs to bring a large box to the distribution to ensure enough boxes for the next distribution.
