League Sets immigration discssions

Thursday, August 30, 2007

The League of Women Voters will begin a series of monthly forums on immigration beginning Sept. 12.

Emporia chapter president Jacqueline Heckman-James said similar forums are being used nationwide to help the League decide how it would lobby on the immigration issue.

Once its national position is set, she said, League chapters will hold another series of “community conversations” with the public.

“If we’re going to talk about the issue, we should know where we stand first,” James said.

All the forums are free and will be held at 7 p.m. at the Emporia Public Library, a co-sponsor of the gatherings. The topics will be:

F Sept. 12 — Immigration: United States Law. The speaker will be Emporia attorney Andria Sandoval, who will speak on the laws surrounding immigration and becoming a U.S. citizen.

F Oct. 17 — Immigration: Human Aspects. A panel of local immigrants moderated by Emporia State University professor Ellen Hansen will address their experiences.

F Nov. 14 — Immigration: Economic and Social Impact. Economics professor Rob Catlett of ESU will be the speaker.

For more information on the League, see its Web site at www.emporia.lwv.org or call 342-7944.

What are our law enforcement officials doing too enforce imigration laws in emporia area? et al; local police, sheriffs and governing officials?
What is the oath of office they take when they are hired as officials in the state of kansas?
{Too uphold our laws?}

You mean the local League has to wait to see what the NATIONAL league decides before they can decide what their stand is? Come on folks!!!!!!!!! IT'S ILLEGAL IMMAGRATION!!! How long before something is done???????? Aren't you tired of your tax money helping THEM instead of YOU and YOURS????????????? I'm surprised everyone hasn't done the right thing and let their REPRESENTATIVE know how they feel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, we DO have plenty of people that are for "illegal" immigration. Witness all the "safe haven" cities, that have directed their law enforcement not to check on immigration status. Thumbing their nose at federal law. If I was Prez (scary thought! har!!! :) I'd cut fed funding to any city that announced that (and there are quite a few that have!)

I know my previous post here was vague- But something smells fishy here.I always thought the League was an outfit that was above board,and their purpose was to help run smooth,fair elections.Silly me! - The website mission statement says their goal is to shape public policy.They are also tax exempt. Are they,or are they not involved in election oversight and vote counting?I'm not sure I would want a big think tank to lobby for,and shape public policy- then be involved in the nuts and bolts of public elections.Seems that they should be involved in one or the other.Not both.Just how involved is the League of Women Voters in public elections?
