ON AUG. 18, the first Lyon County Senior Spelling Bee was held in Emporia. The event was sponsored by AARP Chapter 285, The Emporia Area Retired School Personnel and the Lyon County Department on Aging.
These organizations and their members were instrumental in making this event happen.
Special thanks should be given to Robert and Georgia Taylor, Kathy O’Mara, Norma Karhoff, Carolyn Kuhn and Nancy Morrow who spent many hours organizing this event.
Likewise, thanks also go to the many members from the sponsoring groups, Emporia State University and the community who helped with the many tasks during the day. Carol Strickland served as pronouncer. State rep. Don Hill, Alex Larson and Carolyn Turney were bee judges and deserve recognition for their contributions in making the event a reality.
Congratulations to the 20 contestants who showed the high quality of spellers in Lyon County. If competition makes a strong winner, Donna Breshears, Lyon County Senior Spelling Bee Champion, will represent us well in the state competition in October.
Thanks again to all who helped make this event possible and we look forward to the second annual Senior Spelling Bee next year.
