Lights out at EHS

Students at Emporia High School were sent home at about 1:15 Monday afternoon because of electrical problems. Nancy Horst, director of community relations for USD 253, said Monday afternoon that district officials did not anticipate that the problem would require calling off school this morning.

She said district crews were working on repairs to a nearby transformer that threatened to cause electrical damage to the school building.

She said those repairs represented “no danger to any individual.”

Death rumor false

A man who was stabbed during a conflict Saturday evening has been treated at Newman Regional Health and released, according to an announcement from the Emporia Police Department.

Liban Ali, 24, had received several stab wounds in his back during a fight at an apartment complex in the 900 block of East Street.

Rumors had been circulating that the victim had died, Deputy Chief Mike Williams said. Williams said he had checked with Newman to confirm that Ali was treated and released.

A suspect in the case, Abdi G. Abdi, 30, was taken into custody after bike patrol officer Jeff Eubank found him in the alley near the apartments.

The investigation into the case is continuing.

Anyone with information on the stabbing is asked to call police, 342-1766, or Lyon County Crimestoppers, 342-2273.
