Tuesday
• There’s nothing like a cool treat in hot weather. Walnut Elementary School will hold its ice cream social beginning from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The school also will hold its open house for morning pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first-grade at 6 p.m., and for its afternoon pre-Ks and second-graders at 6:30 p.m.
• Planning commissioners will look at a proposal by Maurice Schmidt to build 20 new condominiums on Prairie Street, just north of Prairie Lane. The ground is on land owned by Memorial Lawn Cemetery that the cemetery does not plan to use. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the city conference room, 521 Market St.
Wednesday
• No regular meeting for the Emporia City Commission this week — it’s the fifth Wednesday of the month, which is usually left blank. However, commissioners will meet with the William Allen White Community Partnership at “Red Rocks,” White’s historic home.
Thursday
• The budget countdown is nearly at an end for the Lyon County Commission, which holds its final budget hearing at 10 a.m. today. Based on the published figures, the commission could not go higher than a 1.594 mill increase. The overall meeting begins at 8 a.m. in the commission chambers of the Lyon County Courthouse.
• Togetherness may be in the air. At 7 p.m., the Emporia Arts Council will hold an opening reception for “Interactions: A Collaborative Installation” by Patrick Rush and Melissa Wichmann. The display will be shown through Sept. 20, closing just five days before the end of another collaborative exhibit at Emporia State University’s Eppink Gallery, a show featuring “combination works” by artists Terry Maxwell and Josh Finley.
• Anyone up for a movie? ESU will hold its “Movie on the Lawn” starting at 8 p.m. on ... well, on the Morse Hall lawn. The film has not been announced.
Friday
• Fans of Christian contemporary music may find a lot to like at the “Rock the Light” festival today and tomorrow in Kansas City. Look especially for the Emporia band “Die to Self,” which will perform at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Call 816-363-STAR for ticket information.

• Happy birthday! Let’s do lunch! Americus will hold a 150th birthday luncheon starting at noon in the North Lyon County school district’s meeting room. The event falls one month before the annual “Americus Days” celebration.
• Rev up your engine and hit the road because it’s Cruise Night again. The fun starts at 7 p.m. at Bad Ol’ Berns BBQ and Ice Cream, 20 S. Commercial St.
