ESU volleyball opens season with 2 victories

Saturday, August 25, 2007

The Emporia State volleyball team began its season with two victories Friday at the Missouri Southern Invitational in Joplin, Mo.

The first win didn’t come easy.

ESU lost its first two games against Missouri-St. Louis before rallying to take a 25-30, 23-30, 30-28, 30-25, 15-11 victory.

It was the first time since 2002 that the Hornets have won a match after dropping the first two games.

Arica Shepard led ESU with 24 kills — including the match-winner — to go along with 10 digs. Mary Walczuk (16), Megan Koster (16) and Brianne Boner (10) all added double-digit kills, while freshman Ting Liu contributed 52 assists.

The Hornets breezed through their second match, beating Drury 30-22, 30-23, 30-17.

Shepard posted 14 kills and 10 digs, while Koster had 10 kills with a .562 hitting percentage.

Liu added six service aces.

With the victories, ESU starts the season 2-0 for the second time in the last three years.

The Hornets are scheduled to face Central Oklahoma and Angelo State today.

ESU soccer team falls

4-0 to Rockhurst

in season opener

The Emporia State soccer team was shut out in more ways than one in its 4-0 loss to Rockhurst on Friday.

Not only did the Hornets not score a goal, they also didn’t manage a shot on goal.

Meanwhile, the Hawks found the net early and often, starting with a Chelsey Schumacher header in the eighth minute for a 1-0 lead.

Abby Davidson put in a 10-yard shot with 3 minutes left in the first half before Rockhurst began a goal flurry in the second half.

Lindsay Ewert launched a 20-yard shot over ESU keeper Megan Martin in the 61st minute, and Tiffany Mitchell followed with a headed-in goal just 130 seconds later.

Rockhurst had 10 shots on goal compared to ESU’s none. The Hawks also held a 23-3 advantage in shots.

Martin finished with six saves, including five in the second half.

The Hornets (0-1) play their home opener against Newman on Wednesday at TRYSA.
