Tuesday

• If the dorm room walls are looking bare, have no fear. The Emporia State Memorial Union is holding a poster sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the union’s “Main Street.” For information, call 341-5481.

• For an evening with class, try the Emporia High School open house. It starts at 7 p.m.

Wednesday

• It’s coming down to the wire for the Emporia city budget. In their Wednesday morning meeting, Emporia’s city commissioners are expected to approve a final plan for 2008, so the budget can be filed by the end of the week. The combined business meeting and study session begins at 10 a.m. in the city conference room, 521 Market St.

• The Emporia school board has its budget in the headlights as well. A vote to approve the 2008 school district budget is part of the 7 p.m. board meeting at the Mary Herbert Education Center, 1700 W. Seventh Ave.

• Not finding enough to do on campus? Emporia State’s Center for Student Involvement will hold its “Huge Activities Fair” at Union Square and the pedestrian mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Thursday

• Even the health-care system can use a checkup every now and then. At 7:30 a.m., the Kansas Health Policy Authority will visit Newman hospital for a roundtable discussion on health reform. The meeting is part of a listening tour that will be used to develop new health policies. For more information, call (785) 296-8146.

• Time for a little fresh air. Riverside Elementary School will hold a family picnic starting at 5 p.m. in Peter Pan Park. Meanwhile, Walnut Elementary will be holding its open house for its third-graders at 6:30 p.m. and its fourth-graders at 7 p.m. at the school.

Friday

• There’s nothing like ending the summer with a splash. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Jones Aquatic Center, the Girl Scouts are inviting all girls from ages 5 to 17 to a pool party at the Jones Aquatic Center. The cost is $2 per girl and parents get in free but tagalongs are discouraged.

• Gimme a T! Gimme an H! Or if you’re a Spartan, just forsake the rest of the cheerleading and come to the annual theater rally for the Emporia High School drama program. The rally serves as the program’s annual recruiting drive.

• Now there’s a sweet ending to the week. William Allen White Elementary School will hold a “Pastries for Parents” event at 7:45 a.m. at the school.

Saturday

• Time to get revved up for another car show. This time it’s the Mall Show and Shine Cruise, starting at 6 p.m. in the Flinthills Mall. For more information, call the mall at 342-4631.

• Or maybe you’d rather get into heavier matters. Well, there’s always the truck and tractor pull benefit for the Saffordville Community Center. The pull starts at 2 p.m. down at the old school house in Saffordville. For more information, call 279-4431.

• If your plans are more up in the air, try the fifth annual Glass Blown Open disc golf tournament in Jones Park which runs today and Sunday. For information, including times, call 794-1238. And watch out for flying objects!
