Lyon County’s mill levy increase will be less than expected, a county representative said on Friday.
County Controller Dan Slater said Friday the mill levy increase will come in at 1.594, lower than Thursday’s figure of 1.8 mills. Slater said the figure was lowered after numbers were plugged into the state-required form. After plugging in the numbers, a positive number was spotted in the health department’s budget line in the “in lieu of tax” number. A negative number in that category would have lowered the tax.
“You can’t have a positive number,” Slater said.
The amount that was listed as a positive number was $33,650, which actually makes about a $66,000 difference.
“This is good news,” Slater said. “Every little bit helps. You’re not talking huge percentages, we’re still increasing the mill levy but we’re increasing it a little smaller. This will help a bit ... $66,000 is a nice chunk of change.”
Commissioners set a public hearing date for the 2008 budget for 10 a.m. Aug. 30, following publication in Tuesday’s Gazette.
