Kwik Shop changes

Terri Koelsch of Emporia is the new district advisor for Kwik Shop’s western Kansas district, which includes Garden City, Dighton, Pratt, Larned, Great Bend, Dodge City and a newly rebuilt store in Greensburg.

Koelsch began working for Kwik Shop in September 2003 as the manager for the Emporia store at 12th Avenue and Merchant Street. She moved to the district level in July.

Audrey Hitzeman is the new manager of the Emporia store. Hitzeman is a familiar face, having worked for Kwik Shop for 23 years at both Emporia locations before the Sixth Avenue store closed. During her tenure, Hitzeman has been called on to assist in other Kansas stores including Manhattan and Baldwin City.

Carolyn Powell is the new assistant manager of the Emporia store, moving into Hitzeman’s former position. Powell began working for the company in 2004 in Topeka. She transferred to the Emporia store in June 2005.

Candy stripers saluted

Seven young candy stripers have new pins to wear, illustrating their volunteer service to Newman Regional Health.

Gladys Azzun, Whitney Brooks and Corinne Edds each donated 100 volunteer hours, the hospital said in a news release. Angela Finch and Taylor Ferrell gave 50 hours each. Jessica Hilbish and Camille Webb put in 25 hours on candy-striper duty.

Green bags popular

Country Mart stores report that their customers have welcomed the new environment-friendly reusable shopping bags the stores are promoting.

The green bags are made of green-colored polypropylene; their handle straps are reinforced. When the stores began the promotion, customers snapped up 5,000 bags in five days at the 19 Country Mart stores in Kansas and Missouri.

In Emporia, Reeble’s Country Mart operates two supermarkets.

New business

welcomed

A ribbon-cutting ceremony next week will celebrate the opening of a new business in Emporia.

At-Home Health Care is in business at 1420 C of E Drive, Suite 300, on the second floor of the building. Teresa Hurlocker, a registered nurse, and David Hurlocker own the business.

The ribbon cutting will begin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, sponsored by the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Check on

young drivers

Emporia-area parents will have the opportunity to look in on their teen drivers in action as a program that has made news nationwide is now available in this area.

American Family Insurance’s Teen Safe Driver programs place an audio and video unit in the car to capture driving behaviors. Parents can log into a Web site and check their teen’s driving report card video events and coaching tips. The company said in a news release that “objective third-party assessment of the teen driver’s performance” allows parents to help young drivers improve their skills behind the wheel.

Information about the program is available from agent Mike Alpers at 722 W. Sixth Ave.
