Congregational rummage sale
The First Congregational Church annual Rummage Sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, 12th Ave. and State St. Entrance is on the west side of the church, with the sale in the basement. Items include furniture, collectibles, household items, clothing, children’s items and miscellaneous. Proceeds will be used for Special Projects Funds.
Barbecue and treats
Members of St. James Missionary Baptist Church will be at the Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to noon (or until items are gone) Saturday with their usual offerings of barbecued brisket (available in sandwiches or a “combo” with chips and beverage), cakes, pies, brownies, fruit crisps, muffins, cookies and other treats, said the church news release.
In addition, St. James will have the recently published Smoky Hill District Association cookbook for sale for $10. The 75-page book contains recipes from several members of St. James church and from across the district, along with a special section for children, which includes recipes for “edible and inedible play dough.” Proceeds are used for church projects.
Ice cream social and supper
Olpe United Methodist Church will be host for an ice cream social and cookout from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church. Featured will be homemade ice cream and desserts, hamburgers, hot dogs and bratwursts, salads and beverages. Free will offerings will be accepted to benefit the building fund for the new addition.
Last ice cream of summer
Neosho Rapids Methodist Church will have their last ice cream social of the summer beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Neosho Rapids Community Center. The cost for one dip of ice cream is 75 cents; one slice of pie, $1.50; cake, $1.25; sandwiches, $1.50; iced tea or coffee, 50 cents. Baked goods and fresh vegetables will be available, also.
Melvern treats
Melvern Community Pride is sponsoring an ice cream social from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Melvern Community Center, “a way to spend some valuable time visiting with friends on a warm evening,” said an MCP member in the press release.
Back to school party
The Sacred Heart Altar Society will have an ice cream social and parish back to school party from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, 101 Cottonwood St. Homemade ice cream, homemade pie, cake and cookies will be served. Outdoor games are planned for youth of all ages, including an inflatable obstacle course. There also will be Bingo games with the Knights of Columbus and a youth grand prize drawing. This is the last chance to purchase quilt raffle tickets; the drawing for the quilt will be at 7 p.m. in the hall.
Equipment needed
The Resource Center for Independent Living is seeking donations of new or “gently used” equipment. The agency, Room 238, 625 Merchant St. , works with individuals, families and communities to promote independent living and individual choice to persons with disabilities. Current services include Home and Community Based Services through various Medicaid waiver programs as well as payroll support for self-directed attendance care services, according to a news release. The agency has durable medical equipment, including bath benches, commodes, wheelchairs, transfer benches, walkers, grab bars and canes, for loan free of charge. Inventory, however, is running low.
