Q Shoulders along some county roads are so overgrown with grass and weeds that it is almost impossible to see oncoming traffic when we leave our driveways. Children will be standing in those areas, waiting for school buses and they will be in danger. Has the county changed its mowing policy? Can we expect to have the ditches mowed soon?
A “No, we haven’t changed our mowing policy,” said Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods. “We’re just trying to get them mowed as soon as we can get to them.”
Woods said the county maintains 1,300 miles of road.
“That’s 2,600 lane miles, and we have like four mowers, so we keep them busy,” he said.
Mowing is done twice a year. The first mowing, in the spring, was followed by an exceptionally wet late spring and summer, which made plant growth surge, he said.
“By the time we get back to them, yeah, it can get pretty high,” he said.
