Sertoma

Sertoma Club of Emporia officers for the 2007-08 year installed in June by Kansas District Governor John Cassida are: John Newland, president; Steve Trebilcock, president-elect; Rod Symmonds, treasurer; Jerry McCalla, sergeant-at-arms. Les Nuessen is chairman of the board; board members are Charles Wilhite, Bob Hush and Ron Dinkel (one year); Jim Stolfus, Perry Ott and Glen Boyce (two years); Warren Brown and Elton Jensen (three years).

It was announced the miniature train schedule is 6:30 p.m. until dark on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursdays.

It also was announced that the 47th annual Agriculture Appreciation Dinner, held June 9 at the Anderson Building and sponsored by the Emporia Sertoma Club, was a success and plans are being made for the 2008 dinner.

Optimist

Flint Hills Optimist Club members have been discussing locations for their annual Christmas tree lot, which has been at the Flinthills Mall, but will this year be in the parking lot of Gion’s Showcase on West Sixth Ave.

It was announced that profits from the FHOC Golf Classic will be donated to the Emporia Public Library summer reading program, which the club sponsors yearly.

At the Aug. 2 meeting, it was announced that this year’s FHOC/Chris Cakes Pancake Feed will be from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at the National Guard Armory. The guest speakers were Braxtyn Stewart and Kelsey Hendricks, members of the third- and fourth-grade Amazons basketball team, made up of girls from Emporia, Americus, Olpe and Chase County.

Perry Briggs and Jeff Cope are the newest members of the club.

Lions

In a special report released July 5, 2007, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) ranked best among non-governmental organizations worldwide. From 34 global organizations, LCIF came in first for its execution of programs, demonstrated accountability, communications internally and externally for its execution of programs, demonstrated accountability, communications internally and externally, program adaptability to the surrounding community and understanding the goals of its corporate supporters.

Also, according to the news release, LCIF beat out Rotary International, Habitat for Humanity, UNESCO and UNICEF, to name a few on the list.

The ratings were compiled by the Financial Times in association with the Dalberg Global Development Advisers and the United Nations Global Compact. The assessment was published in the Financial Times’ Corporate Citizenship and Philanthropy special report and highlights companies’ growing interest in long-term partnerships to tackle an expanding range of social issues.
