Hornet H-back 1 of 13 MIAA players chosen for honor
Emporia State H-back Lucas Sullivan has been named a preseason All-American by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette.
He is one of 13 MIAA players to make the team.
A junior from Tippecanoe, Ohio, Sullivan had 18 catches for 145 yards and four touchdowns last year. He transferred to ESU from Ohio University.
A total of 155 players were chosen to the All-American team.
Northwest Missouri State led the MIAA with four selections, followed by Pittsburg State and Missouri Western, which had three each.
Missouri Southern and Central Missouri joined ESU as schools with a single selection on the squad.
Linebacker McDowell leaves Hornets
Emporia State coach Garin Higgins confirmed Thursday that linebacker Junis McDowell was no longer with the team.
McDowell battled injuries through the first days of practice. Higgins said the decision for the senior to leave the team was mutual.
McDowell, a 6-2, 230-pound senior, was in his fourth season with the Hornets. As a defensive lineman last year, he was named honorable mention All-MIAA after recording 29 tackles and six tackles for lost yardage.
Quarterback Sloan El back in ESU practices
Emporia State quarterback Andre Sloan El has returned to practice and is doing limited, noncontact workouts with the team.
Sloan El, a sophomore transfer from Pennasauke, N.J., is recovering from intestinal surgery in mid-July. He was expected to be sidelined four to six weeks.
He is battling for the starting quarterback position with junior Ben Purkeypile, sophomore Eric Runge and freshman Zach Rampy.
