Kids 4 Arts' Returns to Mall

Friday, August 10, 2007

When you’re a kid, sometimes you just have to show off a little. And on Saturday, some of the area’s “arts kids” will get the chance to do just that.

For the second year, the Flinthills Mall will host the “Kids 4 Arts Festival,” an event complete with music, acting, gymnastics and just about any other creative endeavor. The festival is free and runs from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

“It’s just something where area kids of the fine arts can do their thing,” said organizer Sherry Davidson. “It’s not a contest or a talent show. It’s just for fun.”

During the day, kids will get the chance to learn to make balloon animals from Jo Jo the clown, or take a mini-acting class with the Young Thespian Players, or even get up to the mike at 1 p.m. and sing karaoke. And then there’s chances to make chalk art, bead bracelets, or just sit back and watch someone else perform. In addition, prize drawings will be held every 30 minutes.

Davidson, who runs Sherry’s Dance Workshop, said she started the festival last year as a way to help artistic kids keep their skills sharp. Athletes often have summer camps, she said, but for students who play in the band or take dance classes, there isn’t always a lot to look forward to in the hot months.

“I think if I keep doing this every year, they’ll keep practicing their piano, practicing their violin and staying creative during the summer months,” she said.

For more information, call the mall at 343-2456. The event is free.

“I don’t want it to be a money thing,” Davidson said. “I want it to be a fun thing.”
