Card shower for vet
Fellow residents at the Emporia Rehab Center are asking for a birthday card shower for Nelson Manning, who celebrated a birthday last week.
Manning, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, served on river patrol, has few relatives and seldom gets mail or visitors.
Cards can be sent to him at 221 W. Logan Ave., Emporia, KS 66801.
Child seat inspections
The National Child Safety Seat Inspection Day is Saturday and inspections will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Staples, 2200 Industrial Road, conducted by certified Safe Kids safety technicians. Those participating are to bring the primary vehicle for transportation, a child safety seat and the child. The rain location will be Longbine Auto Plaza, 3012 W. U.S. Highway 50.
Rodeo rescheduled
The Pee Wee Rodeo, originally scheduled during the Lyon County Free Fair but postponed because of rain, will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Eagle Creek Saddle Club, west of Olpe.
Linda Houston, one of the organizers, said the location was changed because of the condition of the arena at the fairgrounds after the weekend’s demolition derby.
EHS Class of 1997
The Class of 1997 of Emporia High School is organizing a reunion for Sept. 21-22. The organizers have lost touch with a number of class members.

Emporia High School reunions
Emporia High School graduates from the classes of 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968 will hold a combined class reunion on Sept. 7-8. A local planning committee is requesting assistance in locating and reconnecting with former classmates.

Master gardener class
The Lyon County Extension Council still has openings for the fall 2007 master gardener training class. Applications will be accepted until Sept. 7. Participants must be available for daytime sessions on Tuesdays from Sept. 11 through Nov. 6. Extension master gardeners receive comprehensive training in horticulture, then are committed to 40 hours of volunteer service during the following calendar year, according to a press release. Rosean ice cream social
The Rosean Social Club will host the annual community ice cream social at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Rosean Township Hall. Ice cream and beverages will be provided. Those attending are to bring a dessert and table service. Everyone is welcome.
